The Furnace Gone
Some nights she’s away and the bed feels bigger than it should. I’ve learned that missing someone isn’t always dramatic, sometimes it’s just cold sheets and an empty spot where her body should be.
This night, you are gone from the bed we make
passionate love on. The spot
where you lay; cool and untouched like the soil
unearthed when a rock
is turned over. Though I slide my socked feet
under the colored sheets,
under the fl oral-patterned comforter, I can find
no heat, no comfort,
the furnace of your body is gone from this bed.
