Kisses Traveling Upon Your Hands

Joshua Cintron

I love watching her get ready to leave the house, the little rituals, the moment she catches me looking. This one is about how much can live inside something as small as a goodbye.

When a destination is on your mind and you’re
determined to get there, I sit back and watch
you gather your things: a purse, car keys. You
catch me

watching you, but I play it off as if I’m
searching for something near you. You
continue preparing

for your exit from our home, leaning on the wall
with one hand, purse

on your forearm of your other, shuffling
sandals onto your feet. You’re ready.

You glance at me, seeing if I notice you leaving.
I do and a smile as wide

as an ocean shore, eyes twinkling like a bright
star in the night, accompany

the kisses traveling upon your hands toward
me, wishing me goodbye.
