The Doors of Forever
A poem about the questions we need to answer before we join our life with someone else. The Doors of Forever asks whether we come to the threshold already whole or hoping to be made whole.
Why marry?
For others’ glory,
to wear the crown of tradition,
to uphold a belief you never questioned?
Why marry?
To join two rivers into one,
for the bond of spirit,
or the weight of gold?
Why marry?
For the breathless rush of a heart undone,
for the illusion of completion,
the promise of a soul made whole?
Why marry?
When self-love lies undiscovered,
when yesterday’s wounds
spill shadows into today’s light?
Answer truthfully.
Do not let euphoria blind you.
The aisle stretches before you,
faces turned,
a hush hanging in the air.
One breath.
One vow.
And the doors of forever
swing open.
